‘PYANG’ is a traditional bamboo craft from Pyangaun, a village in Lalitpur, Nepal. The word comes from the Newar language and refers to handcrafted cylindrical containers made from bamboo sheets. Light, durable, and practical, these containers were once used to measure grains, store daily essentials, and traded in towns like Kathmandu, Patan, Bhaktapur, Pharping, Khokana, and Panauti.
For generations, pyang-making shaped the identity of Pyangaun’s people. We can still see Kapas Pyang passed down through families in the streets of Itumbahal, Kathmandu, especially in Vaidya shops where they store herbs and medicines. Today, pyang remains a symbol of heritage, sustainability, and resilience.
